[SILVER BINDING.] -- VEERVORT, Frans. Thresor de devotion contenant plusieurs oraisons devotes e exercices spirituelles: pour dire en l'Eglise pendant l'offe divin. Translated from Flemish into Gallic by Jan Verbruggen, and put into French by Nicolas de Leuze, called de Fresne. Duoay: Jean Bogard, 1574.
8o (157 x 97 mm). Printed in red and black. 30 woodcuts representing scenes from the life of Christ attributed to J. Croissant, each page surrounded by decorated woodcut border. (Lacks 4 dedication leaves, some mostly marginal worming towards the end.) Silver covers, front side with heavily embossed figure of Poseiden at center, leafy sprays on the sides, back side with foliate design embossed overall (rebacked in reverse calf).
The binding, which includes a striking portrait of Poseidon on the front, is apparently unmarked and possibly of a later date. This is probably the first book Bogard printed at Douay. Lacombe 496bis describes the Yemeniz copy (cat. 1867, no. 136) of this printed Horae and notes that the woodcuts are very fine. He also notes that the work is quite rare and that the only other copy located was that of M. Bigant, court counciller at Douay. Morgand I:4504 describes another copy belonging to Baron Pichon. No copies appear in American Book Prices Current in at least 30 years and the RLG Union catalogue lists only the copy at the University of Michigan.
