4o (219 x 161 mm). Full-page engraving of the burial of Saint Cecelia and the vision of Pope Paschal I by Antonio Tempesta, woodcut of sarcophagus on Y4v. Contemporary Italian limp vellum, covers with gilt border and gilt centerpiece showing the sarcophagus of St. Cecilia with two angels holding a crown above it, smooth spine gilt, edges gilt (some light soiling). Provenance: Paul Hirsch (bookplate); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 29 May 1963.

FIRST EDITION. During the restoration of the Church of St. Cecelia in Rome in 1599, the relics of the Saint, transported there by Pope Paschal, were found in a sarcophagus discovered under the high alter. This discovery is described in Bosio's book. The present copy is in a very fine contemporary binding, probably for presentation. Adams B-2532.
