2o (319 x 222 mm.) Black letter in double column, engraved portrait frontispiece, title within a historiated and architectural border, with the final errata leaf. Old vellum with a 19th-century embroidered linen cover, the front cover with design showing Angel and the Rose [from "Romaunt of the Rose"] in white, blue, pink and green, back cover with legend "Where are the snows of ferne year" with rose design in similar colors, spine with floral design in red, green, yellow and white (some minor soiling and edgewear). Provenance: Robert Andrew Riddell, Christ College, Cambridge (inscription on title dated 1823); Alec Tonides? (gift inscription: "Alec Tonides? from his sister Aglaia"); purchased from Harry A. Levinson, 19 August 1955.
The last of the "early" editions of Chaucer. There was no further reprint of his works until 1687. A very attractive embroidered book cover in the Pre-Raphaelite style. STC 5080.
