[ALBUM AMICORUM.] Blank book, 160 leaves, half the sheets lined, the remaining unlined. France, 1790.

4o (228 x 183 mm). 18th-century French red morocco gilt, sides with gilt-roll border, large gilt Revolutionary emblem at the center (a lance topped by a Phrygian bonnet with two hands across emanating from clouds and clasping each other), above it the gilt inscription ALBUM AMICORUM and below PATRIAE ET LIBERTATI DICATUM MDCCLXXXX, smooth spine gilt, blue silk endleaves with the ticket of Chaulin & C. on flyleaf (some light rubbing, few scuffs on front side). Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 27 December 1965.

While a fine example of French dentelle binding characteristic of French royal bindings of the period, this binding with its additional tooling on the front side also exemplifies the transition to the Revolutionary government with its emblematic design and inscription.
