[CARACCIOLI, Louis Antoine.] Le livre de quatre couleurs. [Paris:] Imprimerie des Quatre-Saisons [Duchesne], 4444 [1760].
12o (172 x 113 mm). 114 pages. Printed in four colors: red, orange, blue and brown (violet). (A few small scattered stains.). Near-contemporary floral-paper boards, vellum spine lettered longitudinally in four colors. Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 1955.
A beautifully color-printed work, with the title-page incorporating all four colors used throughout. The Preface is in orange, followed by chapters in blue, violet, light brown and again in orange. There were two undated editions, one with 110 pages and one with 114 pages, as here. It is believed the former dates from 1757 and this from 1760. The contents are identical, only the setting of type is different, as well as differences in the colors which occur in many combinations. Brunet III:1122; Cioranesco 15478; Gay-Lemonnyer II:877; Lipperheide Xa71.
