8o (158 x 98 mm). 2 fine engraved frontispieces by J. Goeree and 28 engraved illustrations after Adriaan van der Venne. 18th-century Dutch painted vellum, covers stained blue and with wide gilt floral border centering a central urn-form gilt panel decorated with gilt and painted flowers, with gilt initials "S.C.S." and dated 1775, smooth spine with painted floral panels (some light wear). Provenance: purchased from Harry A. Levinson, 30 June 1955.

Later edition in a fine Dutch painted binding. The text shows an old man's contemplations on sleepless nights, and the author's autobiography in verse. Cats' impact on Dutch cultural, that is Dutch Calvinist, life, of the 17th and 18th century was immense. Van der Venne's illustrations are an apt match for Cats's vivid descriptions.
