HAMILTON, Anthony (ca 1646-1720). Mémoires du Comte de Grammont. London: Edwards, [1793].
4o (292 x 234 mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM. 313 pages. 80 portraits printed on satin, proofs before letters, after Harding and Voet, by Bartolozzi, Birrell, Barker, Claessens, Clamp, Gardiner, Harding Jr., Knight, et al, each mounted on a vellum leaf with manuscript borders. Green straight-grained morocco gilt by Staggemeier & Welcher, ornamental border on sides, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, red morocco lettering piece in one, repeated gilt panel in the remaining, pink paper endleaves, edges gilt, with Staggemeier and Welcher's ticket on front pastedown (a few soft scuffs to front cover, generally in fine condition). Provenance: Robert Hoe (bookplate); Mortimer Schiff (bookplate); Lucius Wilmerding (bookplate; his sale Sotheby's, 29 October 1951, lot 437, Emil Offenbacher agent).
BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED ON VELLUM WITH THE PLATES ON SATIN, AND BOUND BY STAGGEMEIER AND WELCHER. Although the title calls for 72 plates, this copy contains eighty proofs before the letters, each printed on satin and mounted on vellum. This copy does not include the Notes et eclaircissemens (77 pages) found in some copies, but which Cohen-de Ricci notes is often missing. Cohen-de Ricci states that one copy on vellum was located, though not this, as it had the portraits colored. Cohen-de Ricci 472.
