LONGUS. Les amours pastorales de Daphnis et de Chloé. [Paris:] 1745.
4o (203 x 153 mm). Engraved title device of two doves, repeated as a tailpiece, engraved frontispiece after Coypel (dated 1718) and 28 plates after Philippe d'Orléans, all engraved by Audran, 4 en-têtes by Cochin, ruled in red throughout (not included is the plate of Les petits pieds after Caylus). Contemporary French ivory morocco, richly gilt and painted on covers and spine, composed of scroll tooling, with large flowers framing a central design of a vase from which rises a stylized tree with nine birds on or around it, the open portions within the gilt designs filled in with red, green, blue and yellow colors, the spine in six compartments with five raised bands, green morocco lettering piece in one, green silk doublures, endleaves of green paper lightly gilded, edges gilt (some light rubbing, old descriptions tipped to flyleaves. Provenance: Ripault (bookplate, his sale 1924, lot 426); Cortlandt F. Bishop (bookplate, his sale Kende Galleries, 7 December 1948, lot 181, Emil Offenbacher agent).
A FINELY BOUND, LARGE-PAPER COPY of the second appearance of these celebrated illustrations by Philippe d'Orléans, Regent of France (1674-1723). It is here printed in 4o format "designed to provide an improved setting for the Regent's plate" (Ray). Although dated 1714 (as in the 1718 edition), the plates are entirely different and newly engraved. They were first published in 1718. Cohen-de Ricci 652; Ray 2a.
