Contemporary French red morocco, wide gilt plaque on each cover, arms of Louis XVII as dauphin INLAID IN GREEN MOROCCO, smooth spine gilt, blue silk doublures with mirror on the inside front cover and pocket inside back cover; plush-lined morocco folding case. Provenance: Louis XVII (1785-1795); purchased from Harry A. Levinson, 28 November 1947.
A FINE INLAID MOROCCO BINDING FOR THE "LOST DAUPHIN" LOUIS XVII. Louis XVII, son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, died at the young age of 10 making bindings bearing his arms quite scarce. Although proclaimed King of France on 28 January 1793, the declaration was without authority since France was at this time a republic.
