12o (154 x 88 mm). Engraved title border and portrait of the artist. Contemporary Spanish gold-tooled red morocco, roll-tooled border extending across both sides and spine, with the combined arms of Spain and Portugal blocked in spine and center of the field, floral decorated paper pastedowns (a few pale stains, some light rubbing). Provenance: Marianne Victoria of Bourbon, daughter of King Philip V of Spain, Queen Consort of Portugal and Algarves and wife of Joseph I of Portugal (1718-1781, binding); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 29 September 1958.

A FINELY BOUND AND PRINTED COPY of Tassoni's famous mock-epic poem. With the combined arms of Spain and Portugal, for Marianne Victoria of Bourbon. She had been engaged to Louis XV of France, but went back to Spain to continue her education as a child. The engagement was later broken off and she was then engaged to the future Joseph I of Portugal. She married Joseph 1729. When her husband was declared incapable of ruling in 1774, she was proclaimed Regent, and acted as the Regent for Portugal until Joseph's death in 1777, after which their eldest daughter Maria became the Queen Regnant as Maria I of Portugal.
