BIBLE, Slavonic. Kniga glagolemaia Apokalipsis [The Apocalypse of St. John the Evangelist, with Commentaries]. Russia: 19th Century.

420 x 260 mm in eights. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. 247 leaves, 25 lines in black and gold ink, Cyrillic alphabetic signatures, full-page illuminated title and two fly-titles, 72 fine full-page watercolour illuminations from the Book of Revalations heightened with gold, 72 large foliate initials to each chapter in colours and gold, 57 small foliate tailpieces. Contemporary brown velvet over wooden boards (slightly worn), edges guaffered and gilt, clasps.

A particularly fine large example of an Old Believer religious book, particularly relevent to them since the Nikonian reforms, which for them, presaged the end of the world. The illustrations follow the descriptions in the Apocalypse wonderfully depicting the monsters and other wonders of the text. This example was probably commissioned by one of the wealthiest merchants, among whom numbered the Tret'iakov or Morozov families.
