8o (205 x 118 mm). Engraved illustrations by J. Chauvet each in four states, folding facsimile. Contemporary finely gold-tooled tan leather of peau humaine by Cuzin, covers with seven gilt fillets forming an outer frame and central lozenge, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered and -decorated, red morocco doublures with gilt floral roll border, marbled paper endleaves, edges gilt, gilt-stamp signed on inner turn in. Provenance: Alexandre Coccoz, Parisian publisher and bookseller (enclosed note); Cortlandt F. Bishop (bookplate, his sale Kende Galleries, 7 December 1948, lot 123, Emil Offenbacher agent).

LIMITED EDITION, number 1 of 50 copies on chine, from an edition of 500. The binding was executed in 1883 for Alexandre Coccoz by Francisque Cuzin for Georges Mercier fils, according to an enclosed note. Oliver Robinson investigates the history of anthropodermic bindings in "Bound for Glory," Rare Book Review, vol. 32, no. 2, April/May 2006, pp. 29-31. Ernest Feydeau (1821-1873) was a friend of Flaubert and the author of "Fanny" and other erotic novels.
