Contemporary brown polished levant morocco, front cover richly decorated in gilt and with morocco onlays of vine leaves and bunches of grapes in variegated colors, with a lamp-post and game fowl inlaid, an inlaid tablet at center with the title gilt-lettered, gilt-lettered on spine, two compartments with inlaid figures of bats, 6 of which are also on the back cover, brocaded silk linings and flyleaves, inside borders decorated by night birds, edges gilt, BY CHARLES MEUNIER; original printed wrappers and spine bound in. Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 1947.
LIMITED EDITION, number 114 of 138 copies. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the publisher, Henri Beraldi, on the limitation leaf: "Offert à J. Grand Carteret H. Beraldi." Meunier (1866-1940) was not only one of France's most prominent binders and an enthusiast of historical bookbindings, but also published new books for bibliophile societies and founded the Cercle Grolier in 1923. His production over thirty-five years -- he retired in 1920 -- was enormous, his mosaic work and cut-leather being best known.
