FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, of the reproductions in the newly invented medium of lithography of Cranach's marginal drawings in the Prayer Book of the Emporer Maximilian I. They were published as a sequel to the drawings of Albrecht Dürer in the same Prayer Book. A very rare publication. In contrast to the drawings by Dürer no later edition was published. Broadsheets (338 x 248 mm). Lithographed title, portrait of Dürer and 43 lithographed plates in color by Nicholas Strixner. Contemporary red half morocco, marbled boards, edges gilt, by Simier, gilt-signed at foot of spine (some wear at extremities). Provenance: Nicolas Yemeniz (bookplate); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 10 March 1959. Second edition, reproducing in colors the drawings by Albrecht Dürer in the manuscript prayer book of Emperor Maximilian I at the Munich library. The first edition (Munich, 1808) did not include the text as here. Whilst the space surrounding Dürer drawings was left empty, here it is filled with the text of the Lord's Prayer in 38 languages.
