Together 5 volumes, 8o (161 x 107 mm). Plates. Uniformly bound in fine varnished bindings of wooden boards with designs transferred from paper onto the boards and heavily varnished, all with floral designs incorporating ferns on the back covers, fronts covers with printed oval portraits of Milton, Cowper, Pope and Bunyan, the cover of the Book of Humorous Poetry with similar floral design as on back covers, brown morocco spines, gilt-lettered and decorated, edges gilt. Provenance: Adam Van Allen, Albany (letter by Thomas Hayes dated 24 December 1873 presenting them as a Christmas gift); purchased from the Chiswick Bookshop, 1 February 1954.

The binder appears to have been influenced by Edwards of Halifax, as the designs seem to replicate some of his stained calf bindings. (5)
