[SILVER BOOK.] Continental embossed silver binding, with six embossed silver panels of the twelve apostles. 19th century.
164 x 135. Front cover embossed in high relief with representation of God and floriate cornerpieces, rear cover with embossed portrait of the Virgin and Child, the spine hinges at sides and at center, with engraved panels incorporating leafy designs and a central figure of a bird within an oval frame, pierced and relief clasp. The six inner panels, each with one of the twelve apostles in high relief on either side, are each hinged allowing them to open like a book. At the bottom of each side are the pseudo-hallmarks for Augsburg and defaced French control Marks "HL."
AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE, and a masterful piece of book-making is silver. The engineering of the hinges, both on the internal panels and the three on the spine, allow the silver to turn and feel like a book.
