VILLETTE, Charles Michel de, Marquis. Oeuvres. Londres [i.e. Montargis], 1786.
Two copies in one, 12o (121 x 72 mm). THE FIRST PRINTED ON PINK PAPER, THE SECOND ON PAPER MADE FROM THE BARK OF A LIME TREE, with 20 specimen leaves of papers at end. Contemporary French calf, smooth spine gilt, brown morocco lettering piece, edges speckled, pink mottled paper endleaves. Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 20 December 1955.
A very unusual work printed entirely on lime-bark paper and printed in Montargis, southeast of Paris for Lèorier Delisle. The first copy, printed on rose-colored paper, is apparently unique, and is referenced by Walter Hart Blumenthal in Bookman's Bedlam: "one copy of this strangely fabricated book has been said to have been printed on rose-colored paper" (p. 74). With 20 paper specimens bound at end, made from marsh mallow, nettle, hops, moss, reeds, 3 varieties of green algae, couch-grass root, hazel & spindle wood, the bark of spindle, oak, poplar, osier, elm & willow trees, burr, leaves of burr, colt's foot & thistles. Tchemerzine V, 641.
