BOLLORÉ, Gwenn-Aël (1925-). Lettres de Bretagne. Paris, 1957.
2o (400 x 305 mm). Printed on rag paper made by the author at his Odet mill. Bound in 1961 by Henri Mercher (1912-76), the sides with marque of an abstract owl painted in red, yellow and blue on black ground under sheets of plexiglass, uncut, gilt-lettered on spine; slipcase. Provenance: purchased from Lucien Goldschmidt, 20 August 1965.
LIMITED EDITION, number 8 of 30 copies. From 1949, Gwenn-Aël Bolloré began to have bindings made for him by Parisian designers. The most remarkable were those of Henri Mercher, who made nearly sixty for him. Besides more elaborate binding, Mercher perfected the technique used on this binding, which allowed him to frame plates of materials, such as plexiglass. A lifelong writer and book collector, Bolloré pursued his interest in oceanography beginning in the early 1960s, founding the Musée Océanographique de l'Odet to house his collections.
