Oblong 8o (210 x 245 mm). 21 leaves. 19 lines in black and red, ruled in blue, pictorial title and half title, 7 colored full-page illustrations mounted within a black ink border, 7 colored half or quarter page illustrations, 10 colored vignettes, 12 illuminated initals. Original hand-colored wrappers. Provenance: M. Lois Murphy (the illustrator, bookplate).
A beautifully design and accomplished manuscript by the WPA artist M. Lois Murphy of one of Joseph Jacobs famous fairy tales first published 1890, as part of a collection of English Fairie Tales. Minnie Lois Murphy studied at the ASL of New York City with Hans Hofmann and George Grosz. She has exhibited her work in numerous Museums inculding: Minneapolis Art Institute, 1930; at the Museum of Modern Art, New York 1936; and at the New York World's Fair in 1939.
