IN A JEWELLED BINDING SET WITH 68 JEWELS AND A PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF SHELLEY, INCLUDING 40 AMETHYSTS, 1 PINK STONE, 19 SEED PEARLS, 4 CARNELION AND 4 BLUE CABOCHON STONES, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, crimson morocco, covers elaborately gold tooled and with inlaid designs, front cover with figure of a bird executed in tan and brown onlays sitting on a tree branch in green onlays, its flowers picked out with 13 pearls above a brown morocco banner with the line "Suddenly 'tis scattered in a Thousand Notes" in gilt, above a gilt lyre amidst a bush of green onlays, set beneath a pink stone, the flowers designed with 40 amethysts, the whole on a dense gilt pointillé ground, an elaborate strapwork border in vari-colored onlays and abalone, intertwined initials "RR" in heart frames at the corners, rear cover with central onlaid lily crossed with banner with gilt-lettered line "For his check became not pale, but fair, as tose o'ershadowed lilies are," on a richly gilt pointillé and floral-decorated ground, onlaid chain-form border, intertwined initials "HL" in heart frames at the corners, blue morocco doublures, the front with oval ivory portrait miniature of Shelley set at center inside a wide sunken gilt panel set with 4 carnelion and 4 blue cabochon stones, blue morocco endleaves, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, a repeated onlaid strapwork design on a pointillé ground repeated in the remaining, edges gilt; plush- and silk-lined folding case (front cover of case detached). Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 14 January 1947.

Shelley began "Rosalind and Helen" at Marlow and finished it at the Baths of Lucca in August, 1818 after he had left England for the last time in March of that year. Shelley later complained of the edition that there were errors "which are so much the worse because they are errors in sense" (quoted in Grolier Shelley). The collection also includes "Hymn to Intellectual Beauty," "Ozymandius" and "Lines Written Among the Euganean Hills." Ashley V, p.68; Granniss Shelley 49; Tinker 1897; Wise Shelley p.50. IN VERY FINE CONDITION.
