LATE 17TH CENTURY, PROBABLY BY CARLO ANTONIO GRUE
The central woodland scene with a shepherd and shepherdess lying on straw beneath a tree with three goats nearby, the broad scrolling foliage border with flowers and insects at intervals and centred above by a scrolling escutcheon with a quartered coat of arms surmounted by a helmet (rim with very slight fritting to glaze)
Approximately 11 3/8 in. (29 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Dishes with similar borders (two of them with coats of arms) and various central scenes are illustrated by Jeanne Giacomotti, Catalogue des majoliques des musées nationaux (Paris, 1974), pp. 472-74, nos. 1387, 1390 and 1391, where they are attributed to Carlo Antonio Grue.
