Lot Essay

This oak desk is in the Victorian 'Gothic' style of the architect A.W.N. Pugin (d.1852) adopted in 1844 for the furnishing of Charles barry's New Palace of Westminster. The handles are similar in design to the celebrated Birmingham 'Medieval Metalworker' John Hardman (d.1867), whose metal manufactory in Birmingham, Hardman & Co., had been established shortly after his 1837 meeting with Pugin.
