Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Meinolf Trudzinski for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

This picture was one of a group of seven paintings by Hamilton that can be traced back to the inventory of the Electress Sophia of Hanover (1630-1714), daughter of the Winter King Frederick V of the Palatinate, and wife of the Elector Ernst August of Hanover. Sophia was instrumental in the expansion of the palace at Herrenhausen as a summer retreat for the royal family and was involved in planning its famous Baroque gardens.
