Grandson of Nicholas Pocock, one of Britain's finest maritime artists, George Arthur Fripp was taught to paint in watercolour by James Baker Pyne and Samuel Jackson in Bristol. In 1834 Fripp visited Italy with William James Muller (see Lot 158), and in 1837 he began to exhibit with the Old Society of Painters in Watercolours (O.W.S.). He was elected to the O.W.S. in 1845. A highlight of Fripp's career was in 1864 when he stayed at Balmoral and drew local views for Queen Victoria.
