Lot Essay

J. A. Baumbach is recorded in extracts of the Bombay Times in the 1860s. The Times of India notes the death of Louisa Jane, only surviving daughter of J. A. Baumbach. This would suggest that J. A. Baumbach was a Bombay based merchant, perhaps a business associate of the Bates family. John Kinnell (1792-1882) engraved a painting of Leith Hill, Surrey for a J. A. Baumbach in 1861.
