Lot Essay

The stamp 'W.P.' is presumably that of a craftsman working in John Gee's workshop. It is also recorded on a suite of chairs and settees in a private house in Monmouthshire (C. Gilbert and G. Beard, eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, p. 334).
The flanked oval motif of the back recurs in Gee's work, with the central oval usually cane-filled, as on a set of chairs sold at Christie's New York, 9 October 1993, lot 118, which are illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1986, p. 222, fig. 392.
