The richly carved library table is designed in a picturesque Elizabethan fashion with its echinous-moulded top inlaid in ribbon-banded octagon compartments and its pillar supported on a truss-scrolled claw ’enriched with the chimerical winged-lions or griffin sacred to Apollo. Amongst those who published patterns for related Elizabethan/Renaissance furniture was Henry Whitaker, author of The Practical Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer’s Treasury of Designs, 1847; while the fashion was also promoted by antiquarians and the Wardour Street dealers.
