Lot Essay

John Chessel Buckler specialised in architectural painting subjects, producing picturesque views of country houses, churches and ruins. Born in 1793, the son of an architect and antiquarian draughtsman, he went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy from 1810-1844 and was a member of both the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Watercolour Society.
Bramhall Hall in Cheshire is described by Pevsner as 'one of the four best timber mansions in England.' The Davenport family, from whose ownership the house passed in 1877, had been at Bramhall for over 500 years.
