Lot Essay

These arch-crested chairs, with their antique fluted frames, relate closely to the 1770s 'cabriolet' chairs included in this sale (lot 904), and are also likely to have been commissioned by Edward Davenport Davies (d.1847) from the Golden Square firm of John Mayhew and William Ince. They appear to be the chairs, with dust covers, illustrated in situ around 1840 in the Green Drawing Room Room at Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire in a watercolour by James Johnson (J. Cornforth, English Interiors 1790-1848, London, 1978, fig 76). One chair, with differing upholstery can also be seen in a photograph of The State Dressing Room in Guide to Capesthorne, 1982, p.26.
