Lot Essay

Probably originally conceived as finials for a pair of monumental bronze andirons, the two present figures of trumpet-playing putti, hail from the workshops of Nicolò Roccatagliata in the first quarter of the 17th century. They compare most closely to a similar pair of bronzes in the Este Collection, Vienna (Planiscig, loc. cit.) and are particularly notable for their large scale.
