Lot Essay

With its decoration of sunflowers and cresting carved with a winged cherub issuing from scrolls, this mirror epitomizes some of the ornamental vocabulary of the Louis XIV style which were disseminated through the engravings of Jean Lepautre (1618-1682) and Pierre Lepautre (1759-1844). It derives from the earlier metal-mounted mirrors like the one which appear on Nicolas de Larmessin's (1638-1694) engraving Le Miroitier illustrated in Exh. cat., Miroirs. Jeux et reflets depuis l'Antiquité, Paris, 2000, p. 197.
