Lot Essay

The model of these vases derives from the Medici Vase published in the early 1650's by Charles Errard (circa 1606-1689) in his Recueil de divers vases antiques (illustrated in exh. cat., Un temps d'exhubérance. Les arts décoratifs sous Louis XIII et Anne d'Autriche, Paris, 2002, p.109). This vase celebrated model was often copied for the château de Versailles, where no less than three vases were executed for the Bassin de Latone.
The present vases illustrate the fashion for this model which was executed in bronze, alabaster and biscuit (F. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique. The Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, London, 1981, p.316).
