This composition, based upon antique sources, is generally thought to have been conceived by Giambologna in the mid 1560s (Giambologna, loc. cit.). The present cast has been updated by the inclusion of a square base with naturalistic foliage, typical of French bronzes of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The likelihood of a French origin is further strengthened by the appearance of two stamped c couronnée, a tax mark used in France on bronzes and bronze mounts between 1745 and 1749.
