Lot Essay

There is a paper tag sewn to the back of the first textile which reads: Gift of Mrs P B Stewart, Textile # 934, SBMA 5-3-H.

At the Museum's inception in 1941, nineteen Chinese robes were given by Mrs. Philip Stewart. The robes, together with other collections of ceramics, statuary and works of art formed the nucleus of the Museum's Asian holdings.
