made up from an uncut four symbol robe, with a roundel, designed for the under flap, the front opening sewn closed, Qing Dynasty, mid 19th century

Lot Essay

Four symbol robes were made for members of the Imperial household such as lower rank concubines. This robe has clearly been assembled in Europe from uncut yardage, the seamstress ignorant of the format of court robes. The quality of the embroidery is excellent none the less.
