Simpson travelled in the Himalayas in 1860-61, penetrating into Tibet, and was one of the first artists to illustrate life in the area. He later recalled: '... what a pleasant life it is wandering about in these beautiful hills, with a small tent and a few servants ... To the sportsman, the naturalist, the geologist, and I can speak for the artist, there is always something of interest. The Hindus believe it is a place for the gods. You feel like lotus-eaters -- far above the world and all its strife and troubles.' (Autobiography, pp. 150-51).
