SHIP'S LOG -- SINGAPORE, SARAWAK, HONG KONG
Manuscript on paper, 'Log of H.M.S. Royalist commanded By Lieut. Reid Afterwards by Lieut D.M. Gordon. kept by E.H.S. Ray Midshipman From August 13th 1846 till The 5th of October 1847' (also for periods on the schooner Young Hebe), including 17 coastal profiles WITH VIEWS OF HONG KONG, TAIWAN, SINGAPORE AND ELSEWHERE and four topographical drawings including A DEPICTION OF THE RIVER HOUSE OF RAJA BROOKE OF SARAWAK, 108 leaves, folio (slight yellowing to outer margins), half roan.
The coastal profiles include: a stretch of the South China coast (landmarks include Kai-ke-ong and Saw-chow Island); the 'N.W. coast of Formosa'; 'Going into Hong-Kong'; the 'Entrance to the Borneo River'; the 'North End of Labuan'; the 'Coast of Borneo' (six pages); 'South Natunas From Labuan towards Singapore'; another of Natunas; 'Towards Singapore'; the 'South Natunas' (two) and 'Haycock' (half page). The topographical drawings include: 'Captain Gordon's grave of H.M.S. Wolf died January 6th 1847 Labuan'; 'Mr Brooks' [sic] house Rajah of Sarawak river'; an untitled scene of a grounded vessel in Victoria Bay (half page); 'Royalist's & Phlegethon's cutters beating to Windward ... Victoria Harbour Labuan'; and, on a separate leaf, 'Manilla Fishing Raft', dated [18]44.
The Royalist was also the name of the 142-ton schooner Sir James Brooke commanded when he had himself made Raja of Sarawak in a daringly opportunistic series of events in 1841-1842, but it seems unlikely that the subject of the present log is the same vessel.
