Tartariae sive magni chami regni typis. [Antwerp: 1580]. Hand-coloured engraved map, 340 x 530mm. German text on verso, two elaborate title cartouches. (Light discolouration.)

An early example of the first printed map of north west Asia and Tartary, from Ortelius's influential atlas, Theatrum orbis terrarum. The map depicts Japan, and is noted for its representation of California, the Sierra Nevada and present day Alaska.
