Lot Essay

The panoramic view of Macao is taken from the Penha Hill, with the Penha church and convent on the right with the Praya Grande beyond. Inner Harbour os seen on the left with Ilha Verde and the isthmus leading to the Chinese mainland beyond.

Bocca Tigris ('the tiger's mouth' and also known as 'the Bogue'), a narrows on the Pearl River 30 miles south of Whampoa, was a fortified customs point through which all Western shipping had to pass. An East Indiaman is shown close to Anunghoi fort, with two junks in the foreground.

The Whampoa view is taken from Dane's Island, with dismasted East Indiamen in the deepwater anchorage during the trading season (their cargoes transported upriver to Canton in Chinese vessels), and Whampoa Island (Huangpu) beyond. Whampoa lies 70 miles north of Macao and 10 miles south of Canton, and was the anchorage for all Western trading vessels at Canton.

The present three panels would probably have been originally accompanied by a view of the hongs at Canton, to make up the usual set of four.
