The dial signed John Poole Maker to the Admiralty, 57 Fenchurch Strt. London 4253, gold hour and minute hands, subsidiary dials for up/down calibrated 0-7 and seconds at VI further engraved and filled with red wax PRIZE MEDALS PARIS. 1855. LONDON 1862., the movement with spotted plates, mainframe carrying the barrel, reversed fusee and centre wheel, sub-frame assembly carrying the remainder of the train and punch-numbered 4253, Earnshaw-type spring detent escapement with jewelled locking stone, blued steel helical balance spring, cut bimetallic balance with Poole's auxilliary, the beautifully figured coromandel box of premier quality with flush recessed drop handles, mother-of-pearl plaque to the front signed JOHN POOLE maker to the Admiralty 57 Fenchurch St. London 4253, the top lid embellished with the original purple velvet lining

Lot Essay

The present lot is one of the finest examples of a standard Victorian marine chronometer that we have sold. The quality of workmanship, in particular the box, is superlative. It is most likely that it was especially commissioned for a very discerning and wealthy private client.
