Lot Essay

The present print is plate 5 from a series of 20 engravings called the Nova Reperta (New Discoveries). Undated but produced around 1580-1591, the series celebrates the renaissance progress in art science and technology. The engravings are after designs by Stradanus, engraved by Hans Collaert and published by Galle in Antwerp. Various dates for publication range from 1591-1630. The print is a fascinating and very rare insight into an early clockmaker's workshop.
