Lot Essay

In his autobiography, Chiaroscuro, John wrote that it was in Paris in 1919 when he "made the acquaintance of the Duchesse de Gramont: struck by her beauty and style, I saw at once pictorial possibilities ahead" (A. John, Chiaroscuro, London, p. 238).
