Lot Essay

The present work was painted while Bell was staying at Helen Anrep's house at Rodwell. Helen Anrep was a friend of Claude and Elsie Rogers and an early patron of the Euston Road School. There were often up to ten people staying with her at any one time and members of the school were frequent visitors. During the war she took in two London evacuees, Peter and Norman, both of whom were painted by Bell.
