Lot Essay

The double-sided drawing in this lot testify to Jennings's preoccupation with what concerns the people. Simple life contains dramas. Fire of London is a sketch probably made at the time of his shooting of Fires Were Started (1943). Jennings would often sketch scenes before shooting them. There is a strange German expressionist feeling in the distorted angles formed by the lines which emphasize the ephemerality and latent ominousness of reality.
