Constant Lambert (1905-1951) was the founding music director of the Royal Ballet. At the age of twenty, Lambert was commissioned by Diaghilev to write the music for the ballet Romeo and Juliet (1926).The son of a Russian and Australian, he led a dynamic, if brief, life. His musical talents showed early, winning him a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in 1922 where he studied with Vaughan Williams and Morris.
