Lot Essay

This picture was published by Klaus Ertz in his 2000 catalogue raisonné of the work of Joos de Momper as one of a group of paintings possibly by the artist's nephew, Frans. More recently, Dr. Ertz has re-examined the painting and now attributes it to Joos de Momper himself, with the staffage by Sebastiaen Vrancx. The present attribution is therefore conservative, but reflects the continuing debate into the nature of the work of Joos, his nephew and studio.

This lot is sold with a certificate from Dr. Klaus Ertz, dated 26 August 2003, attributing the painting in full to Joos de Momper II and Sebastiaen Vrancx.
