Lot Essay

We are grateful to Alastair Laing who has recognised the distinctive hand of the present pair of pastoral landscapes; in his opinion, they are by a close follower of François Boucher, whose name is referred to by Laing as 'The sub-Boucher Master of Cows and Sheep'. He lists several other pictures by the same anonymous hand, including Shepherd resting by willows and a stream with his sheep and two cows (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Valenciennes), which was commonly ascribed to Boucher, but was engraved by Jean Pelletier conspicuously without Boucher's name, as a pendant to his engraving of La Fontaine, an autograph Boucher in the J.B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville.
