Lot Essay

Dated 1757, this work was painted just two years after Lagrenée had been received into the Académie Royale with his Rape of Dejaneira (Paris, Louvre). The picture apparently formed part of a series of three overdoors, the others (present whereabouts unkown) depicting Venus at her Toilet and Galatea. A preparatory drawing by the artist is illustrated in Sandoz (op. cit., no. 25 B, fig. 1). With its cartouche-shaped design, it indicates the orignal shape of the present canvas that has been later made up into a rectangle.
