Bow fronted chests of drawers of this type were once common in Cornish and South Devonshire farmhouses. Now rare, this example has all of the characteristics of this south-western tradition. It is made in the manner of fashionable bow-fronted mahogany chests dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is made in pine and simulated as mahogany over-all, but in this case an original decorative device is painted in gold on the drawer fronts to further embellish the chest. The drawers are lined with their original blue sugar paper, which is a further unifying feature of chests in this group. This chest is in absolutely original condition and represents a long-standing tradition of making painted pine furniture in Cornwall.
