Lot Essay

Distinctive food cupboards, made with oak fronts and pine sides and backs, were common in the Caernarvonshire area of North Wales, but this unusual example is probably from North East Wales, perhaps Wrexham, and has a central door with spindles to allow airflow around the food. The surface has a deep red colour at its base and the pigment used to stain it was probably originally applied as a surface finish by the carpenter or joiner who made it.
